Message from the Principal

We are so grateful that we are able to bring our full school community back into the building to start this year. Our teachers and staff have worked exceptionally hard to prepare for our first day of school in the midst of furniture being built, walls being painted and flooring being laid. Our students are lucky to have such a strong team to support them.

Please join me Friday, August 23, 2024 at 8:30 in the library if you are interested in learning more about safety and security. At this meeting I will review safety protocols, planning and drills.

We look forward to an amazing year.

Social-Emotional Learning - Zones of Regulation Curriculum

This year, as a part of our Social-Emotional Learning, we will be implementing an evidenced-based curriculum called The Zones of Regulation. These weekly lessons are designed to support our students in identifying emotions and regulating behaviors to match the “Zone” to the environment. Please see the visual for an example of what your child will be using to help them name and regulate their emotions to match their environment. Our goal is to create a comfortable and supportive environment for the student to learn and practice these self-regulation skills in their classrooms and across the school. We will have an opportunity for families to learn more about this curriculum during the school year.

Meals at School - Repeat

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today.

Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

An email will be sent on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 with class assignments. A great deal of work goes into placing students in classes. Families were given an opportunity to provide input on class assignments in spring 2024. Not all requests can be honored for a variety of reasons. Class assignments are unable to be changed. We appreciate your understanding.

You will be able to view your child's class placement through ParentVue. Please ensure you have access to your ParentVue account.

Renovation Update

Our renovation work and final inspections will be down to the wire. At this time, we are setting up all of our classrooms in the building in anticipation of starting all grade levels inside.

Should we fail to pass the inspection tomorrow, we will use classrooms in the quads temporarily until we pass inspection. The class assignment you receive will have the new classroom space, inside the building listed.

Unfortunately, the gym and art rooms will not be completed to start the first day of school. We have identified alternative spaces to use until these rooms are completed.

Woodson Football Feeder Night Mission and Vision - Reminder

During the 2024-25 school year, Wakefield Forest will be working to develop a new mission and vision. As a part of this work, we will be reaching out to families for input. Our goal is to include feedback from our families, students and staff to develop our focus for the next several years.

If you have questions about this process, email Principal Prindle at [email protected].

Student Accident Insurance Program

At the beginning of each school year, parents and/or guardians should be informed of the Student Accident Insurance Program, K&K Student Accident Insurance. Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school. Parents can purchase “at school” accident insurance or “24 hour” accident insurance (12 months a year). This is a low-cost insurance program for families to defray medical or dental expenses that results from an accident involving their child. More information can be found on the FCPS public site at Voluntary Student Insurance and on the FCPS Hub Student Accident Insurance Program.

Fairfax County Public Schools is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services, at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Woodson Football Feeder Night Attendance Data

Last year with our strong focus on attendance, Wakefield Forest ended the year with 3.8% chronic absenteeism (This was the 3rd best in the school district.) Students who miss 18 days or more are considered chronically absent.

School Year Calendar Wakefield Forest Family Engagement Survey Results

During spring of 2024 the school community was surveyed to gather information to inform continued growth as a school. Our school results can be found here.

5th and 6th grade FLE Pilot

Wakefield Forest ES has been selected to participate in a pilot for how Fairfax County Public Schools will teacher the Human Growth and Development unit of Family Life Education (FLE) in 5th and 6th grades. Additional information will be sent home to 5th and 6th grade families about the pilot. The pilot will include options for students to engage in the instruction in gender combined classes or classes gender separate classes. We will have an information session to share additional information.

New Benchmark Curriculum

As part of our Equitable Access to Literacy plan, FCPS is changing the way we teach reading to our K-6 students! Starting this school year, we will have a new curriculum for Language Arts which will help our students become better readers. Because of this new curriculum, all of our FCPS teachers who help our students learn how to read will have the same high-quality materials and lesson plans. When a student can read well, they do better in all of their classes and are more likely to graduate high school.

Mission and Vision

During the 2024-25 school year, Wakefield Forest will be working to develop a new mission and vision. As a part of this work, we will be reaching out to families for input. Our goal is to include feedback from our families, students and staff to develop our focus for the next several years.

Updates on State Testing

FCPS submitted an intent to use our division’s nationally normed screener/growth assessments in place of the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) in grade 3-8 reading and math. We are pleased to share that VDOE has accepted this decision for FCPS to not use VGA in 2024-25, as permitted under 2024 Virginia General Assembly legislation. This will eliminate four state assessments for students in grades 3-6 this year.

The alternative growth assessments that will be used this year are as follows.

  • Reading Gr. 3-8 (ES/MS) iReady Reading
  • Math Gr. 3-6 (ES) - iReady Math
