ESSER III Strategies
The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas. Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs. Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students. Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding. These strategies are shown below.
ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies
Outcome: By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, 100% of all students will meet their growth target on iReady/VGA/PALS-K or EMAS.
- Strategy 1 - Teachers will begin implementation of the Science of Reading.
- Strategy 2 - Teachers will use evidence-based intervention resources aligned to the Science of Reading to provide literacy intervention.
ESSER III Mathematics Strategies
Outcome: By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, 100% of all students will meet their growth target on iReady/VGA/PALS-K or EMAS.
- Strategy 1 - Tier 2 and Tier 3 math intervention will be provided to students who require additional support.
- Strategy 2 - Staff will work to shift from looking at correct answers towards looking for students’ thinking. (Shift 8)
ESSER III Wellness Strategies
Outcome: By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, our school will utilize Morning Meeting effectively to teach self-management subskills, increasing schoolwide scores on the self-management topic of the SEL Screener by 10% from 51% to 61% percent favorable.
- Strategy 1 - Teachers will incorporate evidence-based strategies within daily instruction to promote strategies for social emotional growth with a focus on social awareness and self management in students across the school (Tier 1).
- Strategy 2 - Clinical staff will implement Tier 1/2/3 SEL lessons to instruct and model strategies in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, and decision making directed towards individualized student goals (winter and spring)
- Strategy 3 - Wellness team will plan and hold an SEL strategy information session for families.

Portrait of a Graduate End of Year SMARTR Outcome
Goals: By June of 2023 80% of students will demonstrate awareness and understanding of POG skills as reported on WFES student survey.
By June of 2023 80% of staff will show growth in their understanding of POG practices as measured by the WFES school-wide POG survey.
- Strategy 1 - The school will build an understanding with students, staff, and the community about why POG attributes and skills positively impact students within and beyond school.
- Strategy 2 - Collaborative teams will align content knowledge with POG attributes and skills.
